Unbelievable! I had my first pint of this in the Freemason's Arms on Long Acre in Covent Garden just two days ago. It was a nutty delight in the cask, and very distinctive!
ReplyDeleteHow odd to see it again so soon!
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts if you picked up a bottle, Chris remembers the cask version as heavier and not as fresh/lively.
ReplyDeleteI've not had it on cask yet but I find the bottle version quite a pleasant drink.
Goes well with pizza ;)
As a Faversham boy and a sheps barman, the cask version is very fickle and drops in condition very quickly once it's been tapped. First third of an 18 can be clean, bitter orange with a bit of sweetness. The rest, terrible. I have tried to find a decent pint of brew for Mark Dredge as I grew up on it but he remains unconvinced...
ReplyDeleteI enjoy Sheps' Whitstable Bay, Bishop's Finger and 1698, but always think Master Brew is a bit forgettable.
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteI had a pint of Master Brew at a Shepherd Neame pub near Canterbury the other week. I then bought a few random bottles in Tesco one of which was Master Brew.
This is just my view and I am reasonable new to real ale, so please go easy on me.
The cask version was very pleasant but very hoppy. I could drink one or two pints of this but that would be it. Maybe a little too hoppy for me.
The bottled version well, I just going to say this. Its going to sound daft but maybe you will get what I mean. "One of the tastes that I got from it was damp" You know when water leaks into a car or you leave a cloth wet for too long you get a damp smell. Well to me I could taste that smell in this beer.
I would drink it again on tap but I don't think I would buy the bottle version again. Bishops finger and spitfire at least in bottle form are better, yet to try either on draft.
